U.S.A. Flags

Displaying The United States Flag

The United States Flag should be displayed with honor as it represents our great nation.

Displaying the flag with other flags:

  1. Above other flags when flown on the same pole.
  2. With other flagpoles, the US flag should be displayed to its right. It should be the first one hoisted and the last one lowered.

Displaying the flag from a building or house.

  1. From a staff (pole) mounted on the building.
  2. If displaying vertical in a window the *canton should be to the flags right.
  3. If vertical on rope the *canton should be away from house or building.

The United States Flag may be mended.

When a United States Flag has become no longer fit for display, it should be destroyed. It’s destruction should be in a dignified way, burning is recommended.

The Flag Code suggests that, “when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning”.

For individual citizens, this should be done discreetly so the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration.

Many American Legion Posts conduct Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies on June 14, Flag Day.

This ceremony creates a particularly dignified and solemn occasion for the retirement of unserviceable flags
